Overview

This section contains definitions and usage guidelines for the standard Foundation Bodytext Selectors specified by IGP:FoundationXHTML.

Note that it is unlikely and unrequired that all these Inline selectors are available in a single template.

Please note this is the Foundation list and not the complete list for all genres. This list is organized alphabetically type.

PRESENTATION PARAGRAPHS      

 .align-center-rw

Makes a paragraph center aligned within its container margins.

.align-justified-rw

Makes a paragraph fully justified within its container margins.

.align-left-rw

Makes a paragraph left aligned within its container left margin.

.align-right-rw

Makes a paragraph right aligned within its container right margin.

p.alt-rw

Changes the font of a paragraph to the primary defined alternative font if an alternative font has been specified in a font-scheme.

.firstpara-rw

Forceably removes any first-line indent applied to the paragraph.

p.hanging-rw

Changes a paragraph so the first line is aligned to the left margin and all other lines are indented to a multiple of the default line-height, or custom setting.

.sans-serif-rw

Defines that a paragraph should be set to sans-serif if a font has been made available through a font scheme. This is an e-content oriented selector and should be used with care.

.serif-rw

Defines that a paragraph should be set to serif if a font has been made available through a font scheme. This is an e-content oriented selector and should be used with thought.

p.text-indent-rw

Indents the first line only of a paragraph an entire paragraph by a multiple of the default line-height, or custom setting.

.indent-para-rw

Indents an entire paragraph by a multiple of the default line-height, or custom setting.

STRUCTURAL PARAGRAPHS

.blank-line-rw

Turns an empty paragraph (must have non-breaking-spaces applied) into a blank line 100% of the default line-height in print, 1em in e-reader content.

p.decoration-rw

Defines a paragraph as a line containing an ornament, normally with a blank-line above and below. See ornament.

.footnotes-rw

Defines a paragraph as a footnote for processors. This can also be applied to a block.

.full-line-below-rw

Applies a space that is 100% of the main line-height or 1em below this paragraph.

.half-line-below-rw

Applies a space that is 50% of the main line-height or 0.5em below this paragraph.

.notes-rw

Defines a paragraph as a note for processors. This can also be applied to a block.

p.ornament-rw

 Defines a paragraph as a line containing an ornament, normally with a blank-line above and below. See decoration.

.quarter-line-below-rw

Applies a space that is 25% of the main line-height or 0.25em below this paragraph.

DESCRIPTIVE (Semantic) PARAGRAPHS      

.address-rw

Defines a paragraph as a line in a letter address block.

.answer-rw

Defines a paragraph as an answer in a conversation block context.

.attribution-rw

Defines a paragraph as an attribution. Normally used in a block context such as block extract-rw.

p.author-rw

Defines a paragraph as containing details about an author in some block context.

.authornote-rw

Defines the content of a paragraph as containing information provided by the author.

.caption-rw

Defines the content of a paragraph as containing the caption information for its parent block. Applies to any block such as figure, illustration, plate, media. A caption paragraph can optionally carry a caption-num-rw selector for auto number generation and List-of generation.

p.code-rw

Defines the content of a paragraph as being software code.

p.date-rw

Date is an overloaded selector and can be used to define a paragraph as a line in a letter address block, a date reference in a chronology, or a date reference in a title-block.

p.dedication-rw

Defines a paragraph as a statement of dedication. This can be used if a dedication section is not used.

p.epigraph-rw

Defines a paragraph as an epigraph. Usually used in a title block. epigraph-rw is also available as a text-block.

p.handwriting-rw

Defines a paragraph as being handwriting rather than a standard presentation font.

.headword-rw

Defines a paragraph as a headword for a reference work such as dictionary, encyclopedia, etc.

p.keywords-rw

Defines a paragraph as containing keywords. Generally used in the abstract of an academic article.

p.label-rw

Defines a paragraph as a line in a letter address block.

p.number-rw

An overloaded selector that defines a paragraph as a number, primarily used for tagging a reference number in a letter text-block.

.question-rw

Defines a paragraph as a question in a conversation block. Used with answer-rw

.source-rw

Defines a paragraph as a source statement. Usually used in a block such as figure-rw, illustration-rw, or similar. Source is semantically different from attribution and the two should not be confused.

p.speaker-rw

Defines a paragraph as containing a named speaker in either a conversation or drama. Also available as an inline selector.

.subject-rw

Defines a paragraph as the subject of a block. Primarily used with correspondence, letter in particular.

p.term-rw

Defines a paragraph as the term in a term-definition pair such as glossary. Also available as an inline selector.

CUSTOM PARAGRAPHS

Custom bodytext selectors are made available for any specific spot presentation or structure that may be required in a document instance. They have no predefined purpose other than allowing controlled spot customization of paragraphs for a specific document.

PROCESSING INSTRUCTION PARAGRAPHS    

.exclude-auto-rw

This paragraph will be included in both PDF and e-reader generated formats. Cancels a previously applied exclude-print-rw or exclude-reader-rw instruction.

.exclude-print-rw

This paragraph will not be included in any generated PDF formats.

.exclude-reader-rw

This paragraph will not be included in any generated e-reader formats or packages.

.external-toc-rw

Used on a Landmarks-rw section only. Indicates to an ePub packaging processor that this paragraph is the Content location link when creating the ePub and Mobi guide. Also used in an ePub3 Landmarks page.

.guide-start-rw

Used on a Landmarks-rw section only. Indicates to an ePub packaging processor that this paragraph is the opening location link when creating the ePub and Mobi guide. Also used in an ePub3 Landmarks page.

.para-continue-rw

Defines that this paragraph element represents a continuation of the previous paragraph and should be joined to it in format generation processing. Used in retrodigitization where extracted text has footnotes or similar that disrupt the text flow and split a paragraph in the extracted text. Also used in fixed-layout book replica tagging where a page starts inside a paragraph.

.para-open-rw

Defines that this paragraph element is incomplete and continues on into the next paragraph and should be joined to it in format generation processing. Used in fixed-layout books to allow styling of a last paragraph and to instruct a processor for rejoining paragraphs in a non-fixed layout context.

EDITORIAL ASSISTANT PARAGRAPHS      

p.guide-rw

Defines that this paragraph is editorial guide text for use in a editing environment and must not appear any generated formats. Used to provide guidelines in using a specific document template.

p.production-note-rw

Defines that this paragraph is a production note that has been inserted for communication between editors only. It must not appear in any generated formats.

p.variable-rw

Defines that this paragraph is a variable that must be set by the editor. It is highlighted in the editing environment but has standard presentation properties in generated formats.
